STOCKHOLM – July 23, 2012: iZettle, the social payments company, today announced it is working with Samsung to start testing the Android version of its popular app and mini chip-card reader that turns a smartphone or tablet into a mobile credit card terminal. This step means that iZettle will be the first company to provide a mini chip-card reader for Android devices.
The Android app can be downloaded for free from Samsung Apps, and during the test phase, iZettle will allocate 500 chip-card readers free of charge. Samsung owners in Sweden who are interested in participating in the test can request a reader when signing up for their free iZettle account.
iZettle for Android is compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S II, S III, and the Galaxy Note. iZettle for Android has the same features as the iZettle iOS version for iPhone. Unlike the chip-card reader for iPhone and iPad, the Android version plugs into the device’s audio jack.
“We are pleased to offer Android users mobile payments simply and securely through our partnership with iZettle. Just like iZettle, Samsung products are all about making life easier”, said Andreas Norberg, Nordic product manager for mobile phones at Samsung. Added iZettle CEO and co-founder Jacob de Geer: “This partnership is the start of something very, very big. We are thrilled to expand our service to Samsung Android users and enable more people to take secure card payments”.
Android now owns 60 percent of the worldwide smartphone operating system market and is expected to command the single largest share through 2016, according to recent reports by market researcher IDC.
With more than 50,000 users today of its chip-card reader and app for iPhone or iPad, iZettle has increased the number of point of sale (POS) card acceptance terminals in the Nordics by 10 percent since it began operation in Sweden last August, and expanded to Denmark, Finland and Norway earlier this year. iZettle is now being tested for commercial release in the U.K in a near future.
iZettle is EMV (Europay, MasterCard and VISA) approved, and compliant with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS). No sensitive data is ever stored on the mobile device or iZettle reader, and all data traffic is encrypted.
Unlike traditional point of sale card terminals, iZettle takes just minutes to set up and has no monthly fee.
